1) Download your favorite WordPress theme

2) Upload it to your wp-content/themes folder

From here on out we will not be touching the original or Parent theme at all!

3) Create a new folder and name it “mycooltheme” or whatever you want*

4) Open the original themes style.css file and change the top portion (if it exists in this format) with the following:

/*
Theme Name: Original Theme Name - Custom
Theme URI: http://yoursite.com/Original Theme Name-custom
Description: Write a short description.
Template: Original Theme Name
Author: Your Name
Author URI: http://yoursite.com
*/

The most important part of this whole process is this line:

Template: Original Theme Name

The Original theme name MUST match the original theme. If you are using the popular options theme then it would be:

Template: options

If you are using the popular basic2col theme then it would be:

Template: basic2col

5) Upload your new style.css with the above changes into the new folder you just created. Also upload the original themes screenshot and the complete images folder and the functions.php if it has one.

You may be able to edit such things as single.php or pages.php by editing and including them in your child theme folder, but Read your themes documentation. You may have to edit them in the functions.php or the themes settings.
The header and footer.php files shouldn’t need to be touched if you are using Justin’s themes. He provides for including header includes and footer includes in the Theme settings.

6) In your dashboard click on Design (or Appearance in 2.7) and select themes. Select your new theme (Not the original) click OK or Activate. You are now using your child theme you just created!
Click on the Theme Settings in the Dashboard/Appearance section and setup your theme.

Wasn’t that easy?

Uhmm Ron it looks exactly like the original!

7) This is where you make the theme your own. Make any changes you need to make to your new style.css to change colors, bullets, images, fonts… whatever you want to change to make the design your own! Be sure to upload any new images you may be adding into your child themes images folder, not the original themes images.

Now when a new version of your theme is released you can just upload it into your themes folder replacing the original theme. This leaves your custom child theme still intact without having to remember what you previously changed.

*Notes: When choosing a theme name think keyword. If your blog is about Hawaii use themename-keyword
or as example using the basic2col theme: basic2col-Hawaii

First this will give a keyword in the first sentence of your style.css and second it helps you keep track of the themes in your computer files and what blog they belong to. If you have 3 blogs and all three child themes are named options-custom then you could mistakenly upload the wrong css file, image or something later on when you make future changes and mess everything up.

I keep mentioning Justin Tadlock’s themes in my posts. I fell in love with his themes about a year ago and I am slowly switching all of my blogs over to his parent themes. He has also created several child theme designs for you to use with his themes. Choose the child theme with the closest layout and color scheme you want and make your changes from there.

I wish I would have understood just how easy using child themes was from the start. I hacked up one of Justin’s themes pretty badly with all my modifications on another blog and I’m looking at several hours work to fix it the right way, with WordPress 2.7 just around the corner, I can’t put it off any longer.

Justin’s Theme Hybrid site.

A new design concept has been spreading through the WordPress theme development community that uses child themes to keep your main theme intact so you can update the themes easily when newer versions of WordPress comes out.

Bloggers who heavily edit their themes to get that special look for their blog should definitely be looking in to using child themes. Bloggers who use themes right out of the box and make no changes at all don’t have to worry about this.

According to Justin Tadlock; “if you plan on modifying the background color of the theme, then you should create a child theme. Yes, even if that’s the only change you plan on making.”

I’ll leave the experts to explain to you more information on child themes and the how’s and why’s to use them.

Justin Tadlock’s explains about child themes and why he designs for the use of them.

Ian Stewart explains in a little more depth what child themes are.

Demetris has put to together a pictorial for beginners using child themes.

Chris Pearson took a slightly different approach with his free Copyblogger theme, using a custom.css file to make your changes in.

Links above open in a new window so you can easily find your way to each of them.

What do you think of using child themes on your blog? Share your thoughts with us by commenting below.

Twitter is fast becoming the leader in the micro-blogging craze. It is a great way to spread the news about your wordpress blog when used correctly.

Here are a few places I’ve been visiting to learn more about Twitter and how to use it.

Twitip – you have probably heard of Darren and his famous blog ProBlogger.net. He just recently launched TwiTip.com which is a great resource for learning how to best use Twitter the right way.

TweetLater – setup your Twitter account to send an auto reply to new followers either as a Tweet or as a Direct Message (DM). You can also pre-load tweets and have them “Tweet Later” at a time you set. A new feature just launched is the ability to have TweetLater watch for certain keywords and send you an email notice containing the tweet with your keyword. Business owners should set this up for their business name so they can see what is being said about the company and who is talking about you.

Twitterapps – while reading some comments on TwiTips I found this Squidoo lens with a ton of applications for Twitter. Twitterapps currently lists 275 different applications for Twitter. You can even add your Twitter link to her plexo list.

Any more Twitter resources you would like to add? Leave a comment.

Tweet ya later.

It is Miscellaneous Monday here at Pegasusteam.com

Sunday afternoon the latest beta version of WordPress 2.7 was released making it the 3rd release in just a few weeks leading up to the full release hopefully by the end of the month.

I have been test driving 2.7 on a development blog and I love the easier layout of the admin panel. For the first time in a very long time I am actually looking forward to a WordPress update. The automatic update is a great feature that will make it so much easier to keep our blogs updated, especially for those of us who run multiple blogs.

You can download the Beta 3 at:
http://wordpress.org/wordpress-2.7-beta3.zip

Have you tried the new Beta version yet? if so share your thoughts of it.

What the heck is Monitter?

Monitter is a new search tool that monitors Twitter for the keywords you choose in real time.
You can also narrow the search within a 100 km radius of a City,State you put in the search.

Monitter even comes with a built in RSS feed for the keyword you choose and even a widget to add to your site.

Here are my top 20 uses for Monitter.

Using Monitter with narrowing search results empty:

Find new Twitter friends with the same interests

Find out what people are saying about your chosen keyword(s)

Use keywords for ideas on blog posts

Use keywords for school essays ideas

Use keywords to help gather information for blog posts/essays by visiting the url’s posted

Use Twitter names as keyword and learn how the Pro’s use Twitter (add an @ in front of their name to see replies

See (or read that spy on) what other bloggers are posting about using your keyword

Find new blogs to explore about your interests

Answer questions via Twitter asked about your keywords which will help you get followers already interested in your topic

Gather information about your favorite celebrity

Moniter what is being said about your company

See what is being said about your companies competition

Gather information on a company

Find travel deals using vacation destination keywords

Using Monitter to narrow your search filled in (eg: Hilo,HI)

Find out the interests in a specific city

See who is in your area and active on Twitter

Find blogs in your area from peoples Tweets

Research a specific city/area, again by visiting url’s posted

Use and “a” or an “I” (w/out quotes) as the keyword to see virtually every tweet in your chosen area

Use as a Vanity tool, put your own blog name, twitter name, etc. This may only work if you are Brian, Darren or Lorelle though

You may have to experiment a little bit with your keywords, but when you get it right it can be a big help.

I certainly haven’t covered all of the uses for Monitter here.

Leave a comment or send me a Tweet @pegasusteam* and share how you use it or share any ideas these tips may have given you.

How do you use Monitter?

* I just created this Twitter account, I have been using a couple other accounts

A number of months ago, something interesting happened…

Over a 2-4 week period, one particular blog became extremely popular attracting hundreds of thousands of unique visitors.

So why was it so popular?

The answer is simple…

The blog contained something people wanted.

In fact, they wanted it so bad that many people came back again and again.

You see, the person who owned the blog was publishing some very valuable information but he was doing it in a very unique way.

It wasn’t some boring post or report.

It wasn’t even an image or audio training.

The thing that grabbed people’s attention were these step-by-step videos.

I know what you are thinking…

“I can see videos all over the web – what’s the big deal?”.

Well, they were a big deal because they were an inside view of this person’s $15 million dollar business.

Essentially he was showing people step-by- step exactly what he is doing in his business with these videos.

In fact, you can see one of them here:
http://www.marketingtutorials.com/

However, here’s the “BAD NEWS” of this story…

Shortly after this promotion, he removed all the videos and so unfortunately you can’t see them anymore.

(other than the one shown on the page below)

http://www.marketingtutorials.com/

But, since he received so much positive response from everyone, he’s decided to do something even better…

Now You Can Get More “Insider” Videos
———————————————

After this campaign, the emails poured in from people using the strategies and techniques he described in these videos.

The best part was…

The were GETTING RESULTS!

That’s when he decided to continue the momentum and produce more videos… and deliver them every month.

It’s called “Marketing Tutorials”.

Every month Armand Morin will take you behind the scenes and show you exactly what he’s doing in his business.

All delivered through videos so you can see everything.

He’s not just “telling” you what to do.

But, he’s showing you exactly how to do it as well.

…PLUS…

You can even ask questions yourself and there is a good chance that he’ll answer them in one of his videos.

If you’re looking for some guidance but don’t have the budget for some high priced coaching, then this is for you:

http://www.marketingtutorials.com/

I know you’ll enjoy it.

Quick Description

Generator Software has one of the longest standing affiliate programs on the web and with best selling products that have stood the test of time, it looks to be one of the premiere affiliate programs to join.
If you are in a hurry go here:
https://generatorsoftware.com

What I Like

First and foremost, this affiliate program is managed which makes a major difference. That means if you have questions, there is someone there to answer them.

The commissions are great and what’s even better is the
retention. They have such a low refund and on average, when a customer buys a product from Generator Software for the first time, that same customer will typically purchase 2-3 more within the next 4 months – all of which you receive back end commissions on!

They also provide weekly training covering a wide range of topics such as generating traffic, PPC marketing, building your list, designing review sites as well as some fundamentals like the basics of building a good affiliate business.

The other major piece worth noting is the fact that it’s a 2-tier affiliate program. That means it’s possible to generate a residual income from people you refer to the affiliate program who then make sales.

Finally, if you like Generator Software products then it’s worth being an affiliate as they provide insights and advanced notice on all new products and releases.

Things To Watch For

As with any affiliate program, you still need to take
action!

Although the Generator Software team provide lots of
prewritten emails, templates and tools (and they add new material all the time), it’s still worth noting that you won’t generate any sales unless you actually use their information.

Furthermore, it’s probably in your best interest to use the pre-written material as a guideline and then tweak it to fit your own personality or writing style.

The last thing to watch for are their rules and regulations.

You can NOT purchase their products through your own
affiliate link and it’s important to know that otherwise you could be removed from the affiliate program.

Conclusion

The Generator Software affiliate program is definitely one of the best programs to join online and it’s stood the test of time.

With 11+ years under it’s belt, it continues to grow and prove why Generator Software is one of the most recognized brands for online entrepreneurs. The products are rock solid and they sell well which are all good signs for affiliates.

For more information on this program go to:

Affiliate Marketing Is One of the Most Cost-Effective Ways to Advertise your Business

Ever heard of affiliate programs? These are forms of Internet advertising that rewards the affiliates for driving traffic to the advertiser or for other transactions. The advertiser pays the affiliate to place a link on their website, and the affiliate sends traffic to the advertiser in return. Simply put, it’s about paying commissions to people who help you make sales. It’s that easy. NOT.

Affiliate marketing has its ups and downs. It could be draining if you are not armed with updated information and the technical how-tos. But this article’s sole objective is to reach out to you and not to badmouth affiliate marketing.

Here are the following reasons on why web marketers go gaga over affiliate marketing as a form of Internet advertisement.

1. Low cost

Many are scared to go on a home based business because of the capital required. In affiliate marketing, you don’t have to spend much to start raking in moolah.

2. Inventories not included

Product management fuss could be very stressing. An inventory is not asked to be maintained. The merchant does the maintenance required.

3. Unlimited income through leverage

When you have a paid job, your monthly income mainly relies on whether you go to work or not. With affiliate marketing, your affiliates could all just lead traffic to your site without having to lift a finger after providing them your ad copy and links. Though not every web marketer earns limitless, it still is a fact that all the necessary matters for the advertiser or Internet marketer are all there to be successful.

4. Go worldwide

With affiliate marketing, you are dealing with a global market place. All you have to do is choose a niche product and prepare all the necessary tools for your affiliates to lead traffic from just about anywhere to your website.

5. Low risk

The very main reason for Internet marketer’s enthusiasm with affiliate marketing is its having a low risk factor. Especially for those with low budget set aside for advertising, affiliate marketing is just the way to do it.

6. No closing time

With affiliate marketing, your business works every single second of the day while targeting a worldwide market! What could be better than that?

But all of these will be put to waste if you don’t have the right niche product and all the other important tools to make it big in affiliate marketing, i.e., well-SEO-ed website. So better work on this first before ever considering those benefits.

Making an Internet Marketing Videos? Why You Should Be Concerned for Others

In the United States and throughout much of the world, a large number of internet users visit online video websites. Online video websites, such as Google Video and YouTube, allow you to watch videos that other internet users have posted, but you can also make and share your own videos. Sounds like fun doesn’t it? Before you start making plans, you are advised to keep your video content in mind, especially the impact it may have on others.

Whether you already have a video idea in your head or not, it is advised that you famialrize yourself with the rules of each online video website, especially before you start making your video. You should easily be able to find links to a number of different video websites, including YouTube and Google Video, by performing a standard internet search. Somewhere on the webpage of the online video website you are visiting, you should be able to find rules and a terms of use agreement posted. Many times, the video content that is prohibited will be listed in the terms of use. Some online video websites will have content restrictions, but not all do. Those restrictions may include the use of pornographic material or the use of threats.

Unfortunately, most individuals feel that as long as they are following the terms of use, they are free to make a video on what ever topic, subject, or issue that they want to discuss and of course this applies to Video Marketing as well. Of course you can do this, but in some cases you are advised against doing so. There are a large number ways that you could intentionally or even unintentionally insult one of your video viewers. These insults may be the result of a political rant, a religious rant, or a rant on a particular race. In addition to straight-out rants, you may also want to be cautious of telling jokes or mocking popular issues.

Are you wondering why you should be concerned with what someone else has to think? If so, you are definitely not alone. Online, there are literally hundreds of online videos that can often be considered offensive, many in more ways than one. Those video posters do not seem to care who they may be offending or insulting. Since these videos, along with many others, can be found online, there are many who have just gotten used to seeing them. Although you may think that it is funny to tell jokes concerning people of another race, there are many internet viewers who would take the information to heart. Some would not only be hurt by your video and your words, but some would be furious. Most likely furious enough to give your video a bad review or leave negative comments for everyone to see.

As previously mentioned, no one can tell you what type of video you can make and upload to an online video website. If you wish to make and share a video that may be considered offensive to a particular group of people, you are urged to air on the side of caution. In the event that you still wish to post your video on an online video website, you may want to consider posting a viewer warning. If unique warnings labels or symbols are not allowed, you will want to post a warning in your video title. This may help to ensure that your video does not get viewed by those who may take offense to it. Not only will you be protecting yourself, but you may also be protecting an internet user from seeing content that they wished they never watched.

Another month’s gone and life continues to grow towards what you want to achieve or the other way round.

Did you set a goal early this year? Well, did you get what you want by now after so many months of working hard for it? Apparently, most people don’t and that’s the problem with setting goals.

We cannot be setting goals with the intention of trying to get what we want because that will become a chasing game which will wear you out. Maybe not for you, but I know I will when I’m chasing ‘something’. The goal must be a part of us — to become who you want and where you want to be mentally and physically.

Your goals must be something that you achieve internally so that you can see it, taste it, smell it and feel it.

Wealth. Love. Connection. Knowledge. Experience.

If you were to think what success is, it drills down to being happy.

I’m not trying to be a personal self improvement guru here but to stress the statement how we make our lives complicated without understanding the true purpose of our action. Life doesn’t have to be that way.

There are a few things I’ve learned from my life and I’m glad to share them with you today…

i. Your mind attracts what you want. This year, I have my fair share of enjoying successes and experiencing setbacks in life. And when I sit back to think about it, they come in ‘sequences’. Once I’ve gained success, I’ll have the momentum to get another one. When I failed and stay in that state, another failure will come again. I don’t know, some called it Law of Attraction. To me, I strongly believe that you get what you want based on what your mind thinks because it ‘attracts’.

ii. There’s one time Grandma falls sick and stayed in the hospital for a week. When I visited her in the hospital, I felt blessed that she’s still in this beautiful world. Although it’s nothing critical, but my heart tells me one thing- nothing in this world will give me the same love and relationship I have with her.

There are only 2 factors that will remove your love with someone you care about- when he/she is no longer here or you have ignored the love you have today for something that is less valuable but perceived to be valuable. Let me warn you– once you lose them, you lose them. You should know who to call, hug or kiss by now.

iii. Know your roots. If you’re successful today, you’re probably once a ‘nobody’. Always be humble because it will give you more success in times to come. Knowing your roots also means remembering those who have supported you when you’re growing and stayed by your side through thin and thickness. You can master all kinds of self improvement course out there, but I think it’s useless if you’re an arrogant person and not being respected.

iv. Explore life like there’s no ending. Listen to new music. Visit new places. Play new sports. Meet new people. And an endless list of things you can do regardless of whether you’re wealthy or not. Always remember this– money doesn’t stop you from exploring life because there are easily hundreds of things you can do with what you have today.

v. Life is great. You have a wonderful life whether you want to admit it or not. There are people sleeping on the streets today, begging for food and so on. Because you’re reading this, you’re under a roof and are an educated person. You have eyes to read and a wonderful brain to think. For that, life is already wonderful. The rest that you got, are bonuses. Some might complain about being financially broke. You can be broke but you can never be poor because being broke is a temporarily state that can be changed.

Do you have your own principles to be successful life? List it here.

Patric Chan

P.S: You can get hundreds of free personal self improvement articles, tips and videos at www.successandlife.com. If you have your own self improvement course, share them there to get free publicity and exposure!

If only self improvement advice were free and scattered around everywhere, then there will be no problem regarding life, happiness and success. But then again, this is life. And it does not work that way.

What would you do if you are trapped in an environment that you do not want to be in? What if you are sick and tired of your job?

Success does not come easy. It takes heart, passion and time. Experience is also a factor. The learning you get everybody becomes your foundation. These are the things we do not need to pay for.

2. Balance is the key. Dream and take some positive action to move you toward your goals. Take it one step at a time.

While you are slowly starting on the long journey to success, be patient and be as enthusiastic as possible. Do not hurry up too much that you totally forget how to enjoy life. Appreciate the beautiful things you will encounter on the journey.

To grow spiritually in a world defined by power, money, and influence is a Herculean task. Modern conveniences such as electronic equipments, gadgets, and tools as well as entertainment through television, magazines, and the web have predisposed us to confine our attention mostly to physical needs and wants. As a result, our concepts of self-worth and self-meaning are muddled. How can we strike a balance between the material and spiritual aspects of our lives?

Spiritual Challenge of Modern Times
Introspection goes beyond recalling the things that happened in a day, week, or month. You need to look closely and reflect on your thoughts, feelings, beliefs, and motivations. Periodically examining your experiences, the decisions you make, the relationships you have, and the things you engage in provide useful insights on your life goals, on the good traits you must sustain and the bad traits you have to discard. Moreover, it gives you clues on how to act, react, and conduct yourself in the midst of any situation. Like any skill, introspection can be learned; all it takes is the courage and willingness to seek the truths that lie within you. Here are some pointers when you introspect: be objective, be forgiving of yourself, and focus on your areas for improvement.

Spiritual Growth
Religion and science have differing views on matters of the human spirit. Religion views people as spiritual beings temporarily living on Earth, while science views the spirit as just one dimension of an individual. Mastery of the self is a recurring theme in both Christian (Western) and Islamic (Eastern) teachings. The needs of the body are recognized but placed under the needs of the spirit. Beliefs, values, morality, rules, experiences, and good works provide the blueprint to ensure the growth of the spiritual being. In Psychology, realizing ones full potential is to self-actualize. Maslow identified several human needs: physiological, security, belongingness, esteem, cognitive, aesthetic, self-actualization, and self-transcendence. James earlier categorized these needs into three: material, emotional, and spiritual. When you have satisfied the basic physiological and emotional needs, spiritual or existential needs come next. Achieving each need leads to the total development of the individual. Perhaps the difference between these two religions and psychology is the end of self-development: Christianity and Islam see that self-development is a means toward serving God, while psychology view that self-development is an end by itself.

Self Improvement
Religions that believe in the existence of God such as Christianism, Judaism, and Islam suppose that the purpose of the human life is to serve the Creator of all things. Several theories in psychology propose that we ultimately give meaning to our lives. Whether we believe that lifes meaning is pre-determined or self-directed, to grow in spirit is to realize that we do not merely exist. We do not know the meaning of our lives at birth; but we gain knowledge and wisdom from our interactions with people and from our actions and reactions to the situations we are in. As we discover this meaning, there are certain beliefs and values that we reject and affirm. Our lives have purpose. This purpose puts all our physical, emotional, and intellectual potentials into use; sustains us during trying times; and gives us something to look forward to—a goal to achieve, a destination to reach. A person without purpose or meaning is like a drifting ship at sea.

To grow spiritually is to recognize interconnections.

Religions stress the concept of our relatedness to all creation, live and inanimate. Thus we call other people brothers and sisters even if there are no direct blood relations. Moreover, deity-centered religions such as Christianity and Islam speak of the relationship between humans and a higher being. On the other hand, science expounds on our link to other living things through the evolution theory. This relatedness is clearly seen in the concept of ecology, the interaction between living and non-living things. In psychology, connectedness is a characteristic of self-transcendence, the highest human need according to Maslow. Recognizing your connection to all things makes you more humble and respectful of people, animals, plants, and things in nature. It makes you appreciate everything around you. It moves you to go beyond your comfort zone and reach out to other people, and become stewards of all other things around you.

Life isnt the sweetest candy. Sometimes, when I feel like the world is just too heavy, I look around and find people who continued to live fascinating and wonderful lives. And then thoughts come popping into my mind like bubbles from nowhere How did their life become so adorably sweet? How come they still can manage to laugh and play around despite a busy stressful life? Then I pause and observed for awhile I figured out that maybe, they start to work on a place called self.

So, how does one become genuinely happy? Step 1 is to love yourself.

Genuine Happiness Comes from Within
My theology professor once said that loving means accepting. To love oneself means to accept that you are not a perfect being, but behind the imperfections must lie a great ounce of courage to be able to discover ways on how to improve your repertoire to recover from our mistakes.

Genuine happiness also pertains to contentment. When you are contented with the job you have, the way you look, with your family, your friends, the place you live in, your car, and all the things you now have truly, you know the answer to the question how to be genuinely happy.

When we discover a small start somewhere from within, that small start will eventually lead to something else, and to something else. But if you keep questioning life lit it has never done you any good, you will never be able to find genuine happiness.

Self Improvement
I believe that life is about finding out about right and wrong, trying and failing, wining and losing. These are things that happen as often as you inhale and exhale. Failure, in a persons life has become as abundant and necessary as air. But this should not hinder us from becoming happy.

How to be genuinely happy in spite all these? I tell you every time you exert effort to improve the quality of life and your being, whether it is cleaning up your room, helping a friend, taking care of your sick dog, fail on board exams and trying again, life gives you equivalent points for that.

Imagine life as a big score board like those which are used in the NFLs. Every time you take a step forward, you make scoring points. Wouldnt it be nice to look at that board at the end of each game and think to yourself Whew! I got a point today. Im glad I gave it a shot., instead of looking at it all blank and murmur Geez, I didnt even hit a score today. I wish I had the guts to try out. We could have won! and then walk away.

Self Improvement Info
Genuine happiness isnt about driving the hottest Formula 1 car, nor getting the employee of the year award, earning the highest 13th month pay, or beating the sales quota. Sometimes, the most sought after prizes in life doesnt always go to the fastest, the strongest, the bravest or not even the best. So, how do you become genuinely happy? Every one has his own definition of happiness. Happiness for a writer may mean launching as much best selling books as possible. Happiness for a basketball rookie may mean getting the rookie of the year award. Happiness for a beggar may mean a lot of money. Happiness for a business man may mean success. So, really now, how do we become genuinely happy? Simple. You dont have to have the best things in this world. Its about doing and making the best out of every single thing. When you find yourself smiling at your own mistake and telling your self Oh, Ill do better next time, you carry with you a flame of strong will power to persevere that may spread out like a brush fire. You possess a willingness to stand up again and try that will make you a genuinely happy person.
