Sometimes you have to adapt your strategies according to your visitors likes and dislikes. In one my many niche sites I made quite a few mistakes setting it up. I will address each of these in a minute.

Subscribe2 is a great plugin for alerting your subscribers by email when you make a new post. My problem was that on another one of my blogs I have a download section of selected ebooks for my subscribers to download. I had to manually email the subscribers the password to access the downloads every time someone subscribed.
